The honest time budget
A Bursa day trip costs you four to six hours of travel before you see anything. Road transfer is about 2 hours from Sabiha Gökçen side and nearer 3 from the European side; a sea bus is roughly 2 hours of sailing plus 30–40 minutes of road at the Bursa end. That leaves six to eight usable hours if you leave at 07:00 and return by 21:00. So the day works — but only with two stops, not five. Decide your two before you set off.
Option A — history only (easiest)
Leave Istanbul at 07:00, arrive around 09:30. Spend 09:30–11:30 at Ulu Cami, Koza Han and the covered bazaar; 11:30–12:30 at Tophane for the sultans' tombs and the city view; 12:30–14:00 İskender kebab lunch; 14:00–15:30 Muradiye complex and a tea; then shop for candied chestnuts and drive back by 16:30 to reach Istanbul before the worst evening traffic. This version needs no mountain weather luck and is the most reliable single-day plan for first-time visitors.
Option B — mountain and village
If the cable car is your reason for coming, go straight to Teferrüç station on arrival, ride up before 11:00, spend about two hours on the mountain including a tea at Sarıalan, then come down and drive twenty minutes to Cumalıkızık for a late village breakfast or lunch among the Ottoman houses. Return to Istanbul around 17:00. Skip the bazaar entirely in this version; check the cable-car status the evening before, because wind or maintenance closures do happen.
Option C — ferry and coast
Take an early sea bus to Mudanya, which turns the journey itself into part of the day. Walk the promenade, visit the Armistice House, then continue ten minutes to Tirilye for stone lanes, olive-oil tasting and a fish lunch by the water. Head back on an afternoon sailing. You will not see Ulu Cami or Uludağ on this version, and that is fine — it is the most relaxing of the three and the best choice in hot weather or with older travellers.
What to leave out
İznik does not fit in a day trip from Istanbul via Bursa: it is a further 80 km east of the city and deserves its own half day at least. The thermal baths of Çekirge need unhurried time and a change of clothes, so save them for an overnight. And do not attempt the mountain and the coast together — the transfer between them is close to two hours and you will spend the day watching the road. One region, two stops, one proper meal is the formula that works.
When to stay overnight instead
Stay one or two nights if you want more than two stops, if you are travelling with children, if you want thermal baths or a ski day, or if you plan to reach İznik, Mudanya and Uludağ on the same trip. An overnight also removes the two worst parts of the day trip: the pre-dawn start and the evening return through Istanbul traffic. Hotels in the historic centre put you within walking distance of dinner, and the city is noticeably nicer after the day visitors leave.
Day-trip checklist
Book the return leg before you leave, especially on a sea-bus day, because afternoon sailings sell out and a missed boat means a three-hour road journey instead. Carry cash for small bakeries, village tea houses and cable-car snack counters, even though cards are accepted in city restaurants. Dress for two climates if the mountain is on your plan, and bring a scarf for mosque visits. Keep a paper or offline map of the historic centre: mobile signal is fine, but the bazaar lanes confuse navigation apps. And set a hard departure time for yourself in the morning — the single most common day-trip mistake is leaving Bursa an hour late and losing that hour again in Istanbul traffic.
